My favorite multicultural children’s book is
THIS REVIEW IS FROM AMAZON: Miguel has two worries about Thanksgiving: Will his Papa, a trucker, make it home in time? And will his pet turkey become the entree? This crackling tale is set in New York City, where Gracias, the turkey, takes walks on a leash, is stolen, recovered and, when blessed by a priest, is thankfully deemed unroastable. Cepeda (The Cat’s Meow) captures the story’s sunny disposition with gaily composed, Latin-flavored oil paintings. Ages 4-8.
MY EVALUATION: This book was a favorite read for two Thanksgivings at Jackson Elementary. My Spanish speaking students enjoyed seeing the diversity in literature about a book they could identify with and Cowley captured the story’s happy ending, but built up the fear that maybe…the dinner-to-be may not be saved in time. I had students on the edge of their seats, hoping that Miguel’s best friend would not become…
